The West End of Glasgow is famous for its stunning period architecture, and Dundonald Road boasts some of the finest examples. Many of these historic homes still feature their original Victorian geometric tile floors, but after more than a century of foot traffic, they require specialist care to truly shine.
We were recently called out to a beautiful West End property to tackle a Victorian floor that had never been properly cleaned in its entire lifetime. Here is how we brought this historic feature back to life.
The Challenge: Decades of Grime and Missing Pieces
When we first inspected the floor, it was clear that time had taken its toll. Decades of ingrained dirt, old waxes, and general wear had completely masked the vibrant colors of the original clay tiles. Furthermore, several sections of the geometric pattern were badly damaged and needed a specialist touch to rebuild.
The Process: Precision Fitting and Specialist Sourcing
Restoring a Victorian floor is like solving a historical puzzle. For this project, the client managed to source excellent matching replacement tiles, which we meticulously cut and fitted into the damaged sections to restore the structural integrity of the pattern. However, the real crown jewel of this restoration was the center crest.
To ensure absolute historical accuracy, a bespoke centerpiece tile was sourced from a specialist manufacturer in England. Fitting a focal point like this requires incredible precision—there is no room for error when aligning a century-old geometric pattern.
The Finish: Making the Colors Pop (Safely)
Once the deep cleaning and structural repairs were complete, it was time for the final, crucial step: sealing. For original Victorian tiles, using the right product is everything. We applied a premium breathable, color-enhancing sealer.
Why breathable? Period properties need to breathe. Trapping moisture under a cheap, non-breathable seal can cause damp issues and ruin the tiles over time.
The result? The sealer instantly revived the deep reds, rich buffs, and dark blues of the geometric layout, making the entire hallway pop while ensuring the floor is protected for decades to come.
